What Is a Mole?

A mole is a small, coloured spot on the skin made up of cells called melanocytes, which produce the pigment (colour) in your skin.

Most moles are brown, although they can also be darker or match your natural skin tone. They may be flat or raised, smooth or rough, and some have hair growing from them. Most moles are round or oval with clearly defined edges.

Moles often change naturally throughout life. They may become darker during pregnancy, increase in number during the teenage years, and gradually fade or disappear as we get older.

Why Do Moles Develop?

Some moles are present from birth, but most develop during the first 30 years of life.

You may be more likely to develop moles if:

Our private mole removal service is designed for benign (non-cancerous) moles.

Depending on the type and position of your mole, your clinician may recommend a shave excision, where the mole is carefully removed so it sits level with the surrounding skin. In some cases, the area may be treated with cauterisation to help control bleeding and promote healing.

Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual to achieve the best possible cosmetic outcome.

Your appointment includes both your consultation and, where clinically appropriate, treatment on the same day.

Your visit typically includes:

Where appropriate, removed tissue may be sent for laboratory analysis (histology) for additional reassurance. We will inform both you and your GP of the results if this is required.

Concerned About a Mole?

While most moles are harmless, some can develop changes that require further assessment.

If your mole has changed in size, shape, colour or appearance, or has started bleeding, itching or crusting, you should seek medical advice promptly.

If, during your appointment, we feel your mole requires further investigation rather than cosmetic removal, we will explain the findings and recommend the appropriate NHS referral pathway.
