What Is a Sebaceous Cyst?

A sebaceous cyst is a small, closed sac that develops beneath the skin and contains oily or cheese-like material. Despite the name, many cysts commonly referred to as “sebaceous cysts” are actually epidermoid cysts or pilar cysts, all of which are benign (non-cancerous) skin lumps.

These cysts usually feel smooth, firm and rounded beneath the skin and can slowly increase in size over time.

Sebaceous and epidermoid cysts most commonly develop on the:

• Scalp
• Neck
• Chest
• Back
• Torso

Pilar cysts are most frequently found on the scalp.

Why Do Sebaceous Cysts Develop?

Sebaceous and epidermoid cysts often develop when a hair follicle or skin gland becomes blocked. They may also occur following minor skin injury or inflammation.

Some people are naturally more prone to developing cysts, while others may notice them following acne or repeated irritation to the skin.

Most cysts grow slowly and remain harmless, although they can occasionally become inflamed or infected.

Many sebaceous cysts do not require treatment.

Sebaceous Cyst Removal Procedure

Sebaceous cyst removal is usually performed as a straightforward minor surgical procedure under local anaesthetic.

A small incision is made to carefully remove both the cyst and its lining, helping to reduce the likelihood of it returning. The wound is then closed with stitches where appropriate to encourage the best possible cosmetic result.

Most patients are treated during a single appointment and are able to return home shortly afterwards with full aftercare advice.
